certifiedthoughtpuncher asked: Hi! I'm an aspiring comic artist and I just wanted to say that your character designs in The Last Halloween are genius. Huge props for Mona especially. I wanted to ask, are there any early versions of the character designs that you altered or scrapped in favor of the ones shown in the comic, or are they all the first designs you came up with, more or less?
Oh yes, characters usually go through several transformations before they click with their creator! Even after you think you’ve decided on a final design, the character still evolves throughout the course of your work, something that you’ll want to resist at first but eventually come to accept. Mona, for instance, has already changed slightly from her first appearance, in ways that make her a little easier to draw.
Some characters you get right away, while others might go through countless revisions. Ringley is of the former— very little has changed with his character design since I first sketched out an idea for a “dumb vampire”. Mona is of the latter— she’s had tons of different forms, and was a boy until about a year ago.
Don’t be afraid to scrap stuff you find annoying or dumb just because you’ve stuck with it for so long! Even if it’s the night before your comic launches, you can always edit stuff to make it easier for you to draw or easier on the eyes. Good luck!
